The Essentials

A structured first visit covering the two principal parts of the former German Nazi camp complex: Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau.

An essential introduction to the history of Auschwitz-Birkenau

During approximately three and a half hours, the group explores the chronological and historical context of the camp’s creation and development, the lives and deaths of prisoners, forced labour, the persecution of Jews and other groups, and the mass murder carried out at Auschwitz.

The programme combines authentic buildings, surviving structures, exhibitions and memorial sites to explain how Auschwitz developed from a concentration camp into the largest German Nazi centre of mass murder of European Jews.

This option provides a carefully structured introduction for groups seeking to understand the essential history in one visit.

First-time groups, educational groups and groups with limited time. The Museum recommends the visit for people aged 14 and over.

The exact route depends on current access, entry passes and Museum procedures. Sending an inquiry does not confirm the date, guide or admission.

  • Duration: approximately 3.5 hours
  • Locations: Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau
