Auschwitz & Death Marches
The programme explores selected places in Upper Silesia connected with the January 1945 evacuation of prisoners from the Auschwitz complex.
Following the final routes of the prisoners
In January 1945, as the Red Army approached, the SS forced tens of thousands of prisoners out of the complex. The route places these events in their historical and geographical context.
An individually prepared programme may include roads, stopping places, railway stations, former camps and memorial sites connected with the evacuation marches.
The aim is to understand the organisation of the evacuation, the conditions endured by prisoners, the deaths of thousands of people and the onward transfer of survivors to camps deeper inside the Reich.
Returning groups, history enthusiasts, educators, researchers and groups wishing to explore the final chapter of Auschwitz beyond the Museum.
The historical routes branched and did not form one simple line. A guide arranges the particular points, duration and logistics for each group.
- Duration: 8 hours
- Format: regional historical field route
- Focus: evacuation, death marches and the camp’s final months
Planned material for memorial sites
Maps, testimonies and an audio layer remain a future extension. They require careful source selection, historical editing and ethical review.
